We can cut crime!

The Tories have gone from a poor record in power to a policy vacuum.

A dreadful record in office

David Cameron

David Cameron worked for the Home Office during the last Conservative Government and who can forget their dreadful record on crime?

The Conservatives broke their promises on police numbers - they fell between 1992 and 1997.

Recorded crime rose by 81% between 1979 and 1997, to over 4.5 million crimes a year.

While crime rose, convictions fell. In 1985, 1 in every 8 crimes resulted in a conviction; by the time the Tories left office in 1997, this had fallen to 1 in 14.

Violent crime rose every year during the Conservatives' 18 years of failure.

Spin won't cut crime

The Tories show no signs of a coherent policy on crime. One day they're telling us to hug a hoodie; the next it's slap a hoodie. Where do they really stand on crime? They don't seem able to decide and have no real policies to make our country safer.

While the Tories fight a rhetorical arms race with Labour to talk the toughest on crime, the Liberal Democrats are proposing real solutions. Find out about our 5 Steps to a Safer Britain and sign up to support them.
